Complex formation of ferrimyoglobin with laurly pyridinium iodide was followed spectrophotometrically in agueous-alcoholic systems containing methanol, ethanol, propanol, and butanol. Micelle formation of the detergent in the same media was also detected spectrophotometrically. It was found that methanol and ethanol destabilize the formation of both micelles and the protein detergent complex, while n-propanol and butanol isomers stabilize both systems. Isopropanol has no effect. The magnitudes of stabilization and destabilization are similar, as judged from the shifts of the critical micelle concentrations and of the midpoints of complex formation curve. Interaction of the protein with the detergent was found to occur both below and above the critical micelle concentration. It is suggested that the association of the detergent with the protein results in the formation of micellar like structures on the protein surface.

Abstract

Most opaque nail lacquers arc solutions of nitrocellulose, plasticizers, and resins in mixed volatile organic solvents. Color and opacity arc produced by pigments suspended in the lacquer. In nail lacquers, n-butyl phthalate, camphor, and tricresyl phosphate arc common plasticizers; an aryl sulfonamide-formaldehyde polymer is a frequently used resin, and the pigments are likely to be organic lakes, guanine, and titanium dioxide. The solvents are usually mixtures of toluene, butyl acetate, acetate, ethyl acetate and isopropanol. A typical nail lacquer contains about 12% nitrocellulose, 5% n-butyl phthalate, 5% aryl sulfonamide-formaldehyde resin, 1-3% camphor, and 1-2% pigment. The solvent may approximate 35% toluene, 40% butyl acetate, 15% ethyl acetate, and 10% ethanol.

Abstract

Synopsis-A new IN VIVO METHOD has been devised, which realistically estimates RESIDUAL ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITY on skin. Residual activity is measured by placing a small petri-type dish containing a DIFFERENTIAL MEDIUM seeded with a known amount of one specific organism on a treated site for 4 hours. The dish is then incubated for 48 hours, and the colonies, which represent survivors, are counted. These counts are compared with counts obtained in the same manner from an area treated with a PLACEBO. The duration of antimicrobial activity on the skin is followed in this manner over a period of several days. Using this technique, it has been possible to demonstrate differences in residual activity remaining on the skin after application of liquid antimicrobial skin cleansers and antimicrobial soap followed by thorough rinsing with water.
