Abstract
In this study, the cellular protective effect of isoquercitrin against H2O2 and rose bengal-indued HaCaT cell damage was investigated. The ethosome and elastic liposome for enhanced transdermal delivery were prepared. Particle size, loading efficiency and cumulative permeated amounts of them were evaluated. Isoquercitrin didn't show any characteristic cytotoxicity at 50 μM. When HaCaT cells were treated with 5 mM H2O2 and 25 μM rose bengal, isoquercitrin protected the cells against the oxidative damage in a concentration dependent manner (6.25 ~ 50 μM). The size of 0.03 % isoquercitrin loaded ethosome was 222.85 nm and the loading efficiency was 82.26 %. The ethosome loaded with 0.03 % isoquercitrin was stable and maintained the constant particle size for 2 weeks after being prepared. The ethosome exhibited more enhanced skin permeability than general liposome and ethanol solution. The optimal ratio of lipid to surfactant of 0.1 % isoquercitrin loaded elastic liposomes was observed to be 89 : 5 through evaluating particle size (341.2 nm), deformability index (59.89), loading efficiency (54.3 %), and skin permeability (54.4 %).

Abstract
The W/O emulsion is widely used for cosmetics because of its water-proofing benefit and long-lasting moisturizing effect. However, because of low stability of the W/O emulsion, it is very important to control the concentration of electrolyte and emulsifying agent, and ratio of water phase. Among these factors, we focused on the effects of different structures of emulsifying agents on the change of stability. Emulsifying agents were sorted into polyglyceryl ester, silicone and sugar series. We also examined the emulsifyingability of emulsifier by changing the ratio of normal and silicon oil in the oil phase. Through these experimental results, we figured out the property of w/o emulsion depending on the types of emulsifiers, and observed the stability of emulsion considering the change of particles and viscosity over time.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the correlation between physical properties of dried coacervate films and dry feel for shampoo composition. Simple shampoo compositions were made of two different cationic charge density polymers in the same surfactant compositions. The simple shampoo compositions were diluted with distilled water to make coacervate. Formed coacervate was collected by centrifuge (3,000 rpm, 30 min). Coacervate was coated on the glass plates and dried in drying oven (for 1 h, 50 ℃) to make the thin film. We carried out an experiment on measurement of contact angle, moisture loss ratio and SEM image analysis of the dried coacervate film. Dry feelings of the shampoos were evaluated by panel using hair tresses. Results show that the properties of dried coacervate films affect the dry feel of the after shampooing.

Abstract
There is a unique type of fatty acid in the hair surface. 18-methyleicosanoic acid (18-MEA) is an unusual anteiso fatty acid covalently linked to the outermost surface of hair cuticle. A layer of 18-MEA is located in the upper β-layer of the CMC that is responsible for the low surface energy and low friction resistance of the hair's outer surface. The high mobility of 18-MEA molecule facilitates spreading of extraneous lipid by decreasing interfacial shear strength. In this study, we introduced N-hydroxyl succinimidyl ester functional group to the one end of C10 - 40 isoalkyl acid for regenerating hair surface with covalently bound fatty acid layer. The re-hydrophobicization of hair surface has been investigated by contact angle measurement. The inner moisture content of hair at different levels of humidity (40, 55, 70 %RH) was measured by electric moisture analyzer. Treatment with Hydroxysuccinimidyl C10 - 40 Isoalkyl Acidate (HCIA) was supposed to make hair surface smoother by filling the cracks between cuticles with covalently bound fatty acid monomolecular layer like cuticle glue. This glue effect was also confirmed with line profile of AFM images. Therefore, the moisture and structural components of inner hair were not easily flown out and the optimum moisture content could be kept constantly though the outside humidity level was changed. The lateral force microscopy (LFM) by using atomic force microscope showed that the friction force of hair surface treated with HCIA was decreased. It also showed the constantly sustained friction value even after shampooing repeated 15 times.

Abstract
In this study, we prepared elastic liposome containing rutin, known as antioxidants, and evaluated the physical characterization and enhanced skin permeation effect. The elastic liposome was prepared using the different ratios of egg phospholipids and TegoⓇ care 450. The mean diameter of rutin loaded elastic liposomes formulations ranged between 205.7 ∼ 298.0 nm and deforability 20.9 ∼ 42.5, The loading efficiency was observed to be 52.0 ∼ 71.0 %. The highest loading efficiency (71.0 %) and deformability (42.5) were observed at the optimal ratio of 85 : 15 (egg phospholipids : TegoⓇ care 450) in the 0.1 % rutin loaded elastic liposome formulations. The elastic liposome formulation was selected for further transdermal permeation study. The elastic liposome(129.9 μg/㎠) exhibited a significantly higher skin permeation compared with general liposome (98.0 μg/㎠) and 1,3-butylene glycol (76.3 μg/㎠) solution. These results suggest that the elastic liposome formulation using TegoⓇ care 450 as a major edge activator could be useful for the delivery of active ingredient through the skin barrier.

Abstract
Steamed ginseng is well known as a tonic medicine for restoring and enhancing human health. Steamed ginseng had more pharmacologically activity than white ginseng. The effects of steamed ginseng on transplantable tumors, proliferation of lymphocyte and rat liver lipid peroxidation were studied. This study was performed to evaluate the antioxidation and antiwrinkle effects of three ginseng extracts. Raw ginseng (RGS) and dried ginseng (DGS) mature like red ginseng in addition to the ready-made red ginseng (GS) purchased in the market, were steamed and extracted by red ginseng extractor. Three extracts of steamed ginseng were investigated to determine effects of superoxide radical scavenging activity, hydroxyl radical scavenging activity, autooxidation inhibition of linoleic acid, collagenase inhibition and collagen synthesis in normal fibroblast. RGS showed not only the highest superoxide radical scavenging activity at a concentration of 100 ug/mL but also the hydroxyl radical scavenging activity higher than vitamin C. Also RGS showed the highest activity in inhibition of autooxidation of linolic acid, collagen synthesis, and collagenase inhibition.

Abstract
In this study, silk-gland powder of silkworm was investigated for the usefulness as a potential agent for functional cosmetics, total content of amino acids and DPPH free radical scavenging assay, and clinical trial were done. The analysis of the amino acids of silk-gland powder showed that serine (26.77 %) content was the highest and aspartic acid, glycine, and glutamic acid followed that. DPPH free radical scavenging activity of silk-gland powder was lower than vitamin C (82.3 % v.s. 97 %), The moisture and elasticity were increased in silk-gland powder compared to control cosmetics by 257.2 % and 181.15 %, relatively. These results suggest that silk-gland powder of silkworm may have beneficial properties as a material for cosmeceuticals.

Abstract
This study is focused on finding new natural materials that have antimicrobial activity. We found that 3 plants extracts, Magnolia sieboldii K. Koch (M. sieboldii K. Koch), Rhus chinensis (R. chinensis) and Metasequioa glyptostroboides (M. glyptostroboides), have antimicrobial activities by disk diffusion method. We determined the Minimum Inhibitory Concentation (MIC) of each and found that 0.3 ∼ 0.35 % of M. glyptostroboides essential oil and 0.35 ∼ 0.4 % of M. sieboldii K. Koch extracts inhibited fungal growth and 0.45 ∼ 0.5 % of R. chinensis extracts inhibited bacterial growth. We isolated compounds from extracts and verified what have antimicrobial activity. As a result we found that caryophyllene oxide and caryophyllene isolated from M. glyptostroboides, costunolide and dehydrocostus lactone from M. sieboldii K. Koch and ethyl gallate, ethyl-3-gallate from R. chinensis have antimicrobial activities. In accordance with antimicrobial activity, O/W cosmetic emulsion containing mixture of 3 plants extracts showed preservative efficacy against both bacteria and fungi. Based on the above data we suggest that extracts from M. siebodii K. Koch, R. chinensis, and M. glyptostroboides, replace chemical synthetic preservatives and be applied as a natural preservative.

Abstract
Ligustrum lucidum (L. lucidum) contains large quantities of ursolic acid and oleanolic acid. In this study, we evaluated anti-wrinkle effects of three parts of L. lucidum extracts. We found that L. lucidum extracts were not only innocuous to human skin fibroblasts but also significantly decreased the expression of both MMP-1 and MMP-2 and increased the expression of COL1A1. Among the three parts of L. lucidum extracts (i.e., fruit, cane, and leaf extracts), the fruit extract was found to contain the greatest amounts of ursolic acid and oleanolic acid. These three parts of L. lucidum extracts increased the expression of COL1A1 and decreased the expression of MMP-1 and MMP-2 in a dose-dependent manner. Especially, the fruit extract of L. lucidum had the greatest upregulating effect on COL1A1 and the greatest downregulating effect on MMP-1 and MMP-2 in a non-toxic and dose-dependent manner. These results suggest that L. lucidum, especially the fruit, could be used as active ingredients for functional cosmetics.

Abstract
Slim813 is a 2-cyclopentene-1-one oxime derivative with potent anti-inflammatory and anti-photoaging effects. Slim813 inhibited LPS-induced TNF-α production and attenuated UVB-induced MMP1 expression. Here in an attempt to find an unrevealed efficacy of Slim813, we found that Slim813 stimulates lipolysis in a dose-dependent manner by increasing intracellular cAMP level through the elevation of HSL activity in fully differentiated adipocytes. Moreover, topical application of Slim813 for two weeks in human reduced the thickness of subcutaneous fat in arm and thigh regions, implying it could be effectively used in the reduction of unwanted local fat accumulation.
