Abstract
Chitosan oligosaccharide having physiological activity, such as cell proliferation and wound healing, was prepared by NaNO2 oxidation-NaBH4 reduction from natural chitosan. After deamination by NaNO2 oxidation, the reducing-end residue from NaBH4 was converted to alditol unit, and the reduction was checked by MBTH reagent. The resulting chitosan oligosaccharide had a degree of polymeration of 2-6 from HPLC analysis. From moisture absorption test at relative humidity of 43% and 81%, the moisture absorption ability was 63% and 57%. Moisture retention ability at relative humidity of 43%, silica gel emvironment, was 98% and 97% respectively. Cell proliferation was showed in the range of 0.000032~0.01%, wound healing effect was also appeared in the concentration of 2% and 20%. Antioxidative effect (SC50) was 3213 ppm. Chitosan oligosaccharide was compatible with most of ingredients used in cosmetic products.

Abstract
Medimin A is a derivative of vitamin A which has been developed by coupling retinoic acid with polyethylene glycol(PEG) to enhance skin permeability and stability. We carried out the collagen synthesis and clinical test to examine the reducing effect of wrinkles by Medimin In vitro collagen synthesis was evaluated by quantitative assay of [3H]-proline incorporation into collagenase sensitive protein in fibroblast cultures. Clinical test was evaluated by image analysis of skin replica, visual observation and self-estimated response of volunteers for 10 weeks. Medimin A stimulated about 40% in collagen synthesis. The area of main deep wrinkle on the skin replica was reduced 38.4% with topical application of O/W emulsion containing 0.2% Medimin A, The wrinkles on the eye region was also reduced 25.4%-44.1% by the visual observation and 93% of all volunteers responded that topical application of the O/W emulsion was showed some reducing effect of wrinkles after 10weeks. From these results, we suggest that Medimin A is a potent anti-wrinkle agent by objective evaluation methods(m vitro collagen synthesis and image analysis of skin replica) and subjective evaluation methods(visual observation and self-estimated response of volunteers).

Abstract
Planarized SiO₂ particles were prepared by two-step reduction method of making much smaller particles, micron-sized ones, to improve spreadability, adherence, and smoothness. Various pigments known as flaky extender usually have terrace layers on their surfaces, but SiO₂ Particles in this study exhibit a smooth surface structure. These single SiO₂ particles were used for core particles to prepare the composite particles coated with ultra fine TiO₂ particles by a homogeneous precipitation method. The thickness and the morphology of the deposited TiO₂ layer could be altered by adjusting the reactant concentrations, reaction time and temperature. The characteristics of SiO₂/TiO₂composite in the field of color cosmetics is to give a UV-cut effect and to enhance the chroma of human skin color, one of optical properties.

Abstract
A muti-lamellar emulsion containing a pseudoceramide, N-Ethanol-2-myristyl/ palmityl-3- oxostearmide/arachidamide(PC-9) has been prepared and its efficacy evaluation has been investigated. In order to prepare a muti-lamellar emulsion, first, the gram ratios of PC-9, fatty acid and cholesterol on the phase diagram to be capable of forming their lamellar liquid crystal structures were determined and secondly, the multi-lamellar emulsion was preprared using glyceryl monostearate and polyoxyethylene glyceryl monosteartate as emulsifers together with above mentioned pseudo-stratum comeum lipid components. Besides natural oils such as olive oil had a tendency to build up the multi-lamellar emulsion. And according as the amount of oil increased in the emulsion, it was observed that the optical anisotropy of “Maltese Cross” which was a typical configuration of multi-lamella mesophase texture diminished. In the dried state of the multi-lamella emulsion, it was examined to transform its emulsion phase into a lamella liquid crystal one. And finally, when the emulsion was applied into a human skin, it was investigated that it had effectiveness in reducing transepidermal water loss (TEWL) of the skin.

Abstract
Several solvent extracts from Alpinia katsumadai were prepared and their various anti-inflammatory activities were evaluated. Alpinia katsumadai extract showed high various anti-inflammatory effects among the 8 medicinal plant extracts. Butanol extract from Alpinia katsumadai showed a potent anti-oxidative and free radical scavenging activities. Free radical scavenging effect of butanol fraction of Alpinia katsumadai(lC50 : 5μg/㎖) was higher than butylated hydroxytoluene(IC50 : 50/μg/㎖) and ascorbic acid(IC50 : 22μg/㎖). Alpinia katsumadai butanol fraction exhibited relatively high antioxidative activity(IC50 : 80μg/㎖) compared to ascorbic acid. The inhibitory effect of Alpinia katsumadai ethanol extract on elastase exhibited 10 to 78% at 100 to 1000μg/㎖ concentration ; the IC50 values with 465.7μg/㎖ for porcine pancreatic elastase(PPE) and 481.9μg/㎖ for human leukocyte elastase(HLE), respectively. The Alpinia katsumadai extract inhibited effectively hyaluronidase activity(IC50 : 335μg/㎖), and showed inhibition in vitro on delayed hypersensitivity when it was topically applied. These results suggest that Alpinia katsumadai extract may reduce inflammatory skin trouble. The Alpinia katsumadai extract also showed higher inhibitory effect of melanin biosynthesis on cultured melanoma cell compared to arbutin and kojic acid.

Abstract
This research was undertaken to manage the waste treatment facility in cosmetic plants more effectively. The discharge and the treatment of pollutant in cosmetic plants were analyzed. And several factors which had an influential effect of the treatment cost, were found out. Effective management methods are proposed. Since average operating rate is estimated from 29% to 56%, the facility has an 44% to 71% surplus capacity. The pollutant removal rate influences highly on the treatment cost. The amount of MLSS is the factor that effects the removal rate. Chemical cost and the amount of the sludge are the influencing factors. To reduce the waste water treatment cost, the saving of SV30 use and the management of MLSS amount are essential.

Abstract
3 Kinds of PEG-hEGF conjugate, PEGl-hEGF, PEG5-hEGF, PEGlO-hEGF, were synthesized. Major fractions containing 2 chains of PEG were separated by preparative GPC. Molecular weight was estimated by GPC-MALLS, TOF-Mass and SDS-PAGE, and the data were well corresponding to calculated one. The cell proliferation effect of the conjugates was evaluated, indicating that the conjugate bound to longer chain PEG exhibits lower activity. Selective modification of hEGF and activity preservation of PEG- hEGF conjugate are undergoing.

Abstract
A newly synthesized polyhydroxy aromatic compound(LG 106W) has good skin lightening effect. Inclusion complexation of LG 106W with β -cyclodextrin and its hydroxypropyl and dimethyl derivatives was studied by the solubility method, scanning electron microscopy and differential thermal analysis. A relationship between host and guest was clearly reflected in the magnitude of the stability constant(DM- β > HP- β >β -cyclodextrin). Formulation problems, which resulted from its very low solubility in aqueous solution, were resolved by the inclusion formation. LG 106W from inclusions is much more water-soluble than pure one. The improvement of pH and temperature stability correlated with the increased solubility was also observed. Inclusion complex of LG 106W had similar activity to pure LG 106W on the inhibition of melanin synthesis in B-16 melanoma cell but showed lower irritation on cultured cell test in vitro. According to the results, cyclodextrins might be one of the reliable candidates for improving the availability of LG 106W.

Abstract
The o/w emulsions were prepared by lysolecithin as a biosurfactantsto to emulsify oils with squalane(SQ), liquid paraffin(LP), octylpalmitate(OP), octylstearate(OS), alkyl benzoate(AB), isostearyl benzoate(ISB). The droplets size and shape of o/w emulsions were investigated by laser light scattering.
With dynamic light scattering hydrodynamic radius(Rh) of emulsion droplets was varied from 150nm to 250nm and critical concentration of oil in which the hydrodynamic radius(Rh) of emulsion droplets decreased and increased was found in the point of 0.5wt% oil concentration, and it was found increasing the polarity of oil deccreased the droplets, the droplets size of SQCpolar oil) were lower than SQ(nonpolar oil).)
With static light scattering radius of gyration(Rg) of emulusion droplets was to be calculated. From measurements of the ratio of Rg/Rh it was found that the shape of droplet of ISB, AB(poIar oils) were sphere, for OP, OS(apolar oil) were oblate, for LP, SQ(nonpolar oil) were rod. The viscosity of emulsion in the form of rod was higher than that of emulsion in the form of sphere.
